How to Correct Trailer Sway with Simple, Affordable Trailer Repair

Owning a trailer gives you freedom to travel the country while enjoying the amenities of a home on the road. However, operating a large vehicle comes with a learning curve to ensure you and your family are safe on the road. One issue which many trailer operators face is sway. RV sway is an unpleasant side-to-side motion laden vehicles make when they are not balanced properly. It is a scary sensation and can even lead to an accident if severe enough. Improper Loading Can Cause Swaying on the Road

The causes of sway are many, but a few stand out as more common than the rest. The prime culprit is improper loading. Remember the 20 Percent Rule

If you’ve only driven cars before, you’re used to the feel of braking the vehicle. However, RVs use an air brake rather than a hydraulic one, which is why there is a slight delay when applying the brakes. You’ll notice that a fully loaded rig will halt slower than traditional cars. This is why veteran RV owners remind neophytes of the 20% rule—add 20% to everything you do on the road, from the distance you maintain between the next vehicle to how early you hit the brakes.
